The Suez Crisis prompted the start of designing and creating the original Mini. This crisis led many companies to develop more fuel-efficient cars. Sir Leonard Lord of the Morris Company commissioned his, Alec Issigonis, to create a cost-efficient, small four-seater. Two years later, the first Mini launched, which surprised people because of the way it looked and how the Morris Company was able to design a vehicle so small, yet with so much room. They also participated in racing, in which brought them great success, and a platform to launch performance-oriented versions of the Mini.
